Melanie Long, LGPC

Hello! I’m Melanie Long. If you’re looking for a therapist who embraces your quirks and helps you navigate life with authenticity, I’d love to connect!
I’ve been fascinated by how minds, emotions, and relationships work for as long as I can remember—it’s a passion that led me to earn a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the College of William & Mary. Now, I have the privilege of sitting with clients engaging in the hard, brave, and beautiful work of therapy.
I stay curious, reading and attending trainings (like Emotionally Focused Therapy Externship and Core Skills, Internal Family Systems workshops) so I can integrate a range of approaches in session. Think less “ivory tower” and more me rummaging through well-worn books because I remembered something quirky and profound that just might help.
While I work with many concerns, I specialize in treating trauma and its symptoms—anxiety, depression, and attachment challenges, both in individuals and in relationships. Many of my clients wouldn’t necessarily label their experiences as trauma; we work with life in the present, and it often leads to the past. In session, we’ll explore emotions, sensations, and patterns, gently tuning into the parts of the self that seek healing. Sometimes these modes of self-knowledge lead to people asking the big questions: the ones about meaning, existence, and spirituality—which are potent agents of change. Please feel very welcome to bring any of these questions or experiences into session.
Outside of sessions, you’ll find me spending time with my family, singing and playing guitar, or meticulously planning a trip with an overly ambitious itinerary.

Therapy is serious work, but life is full of humor, too—both tend to show up in my sessions.

I’m currently under supervision of Olya Rich, LCPC
