Internal Family Systems

You are not one thing. You are made up of parts, and every one of them has a reason.

What brought you here

The work needs to go somewhere talking has not reached.

Two people. Different reasons. The same recognition that the work needs to go somewhere talking has not been able to reach.

Rachel. Rachel has done years of good therapy. She can describe her inner critic in clinical detail. She has named the part of her that performs, the part that hides, and the part that has been managing everyone else’s emotional weather since she was nine. The naming has not changed who runs the show. By eleven on most weeknights the critic is still the loudest voice in the room. She came here looking for a way to meet that part of herself instead of arguing with it.
Marcus. Marcus is forty-eight and in a marriage he wants to stay in. He keeps finding himself reacting in ways that surprise him. The pull to shut down at the first sign of conflict. The voice that says don’t ask for what you need. The way an old loneliness moves through him in the kitchen at moments his wife cannot read. He has done the cognitive work. He can trace the patterns to childhood. The tracing has not loosened them.
What IFS is, and what the work looks like

No part is the enemy. Every part has a reason.

Internal Family Systems starts from a premise most people have already lived without putting language to: you are not one thing. You are made up of parts. Voices. Modes. Inner sub-personalities that took on roles a long time ago, often when you were young, often because someone in the system had to.

The protector who keeps the peace. The critic who got you through. The exile who carries the early hurt you have spent years trying not to feel. The manager running the spreadsheet of everyone else’s needs.

The work is meeting these parts, learning what they have been protecting, and letting them know they are not alone in there anymore. As parts feel heard, they soften. As they soften, they step back. What shows up in the space they leave is what IFS calls Self, the part of you that was there before any of the others took the job.

IFS sessions move slowly. We get curious. We ask the parts what they have been carrying, what age they took the job, what they have been afraid would happen if they let down their watch. Some sessions focus on a single part. Some hold several. Some are quieter than other kinds of therapy, because the listening is the work.

Over time, parts unburden. The role they were holding gets lighter. The Self leads more of the time.

What changes

The voice gets quieter when you stop asking it to leave.

Rachel. The critic still shows up. She has stopped fighting it. The voice is quieter when she stops asking it to leave.

Marcus. He caught the shutdown before it landed last Sunday. He asked instead. The conversation went somewhere new.

Decisions get clearer. Reactivity slows. The parts that were running without a vote are heard at last.

Who you’d work with

We match you to a clinician whose training and presence fit the parts ready to be heard.

Olya Rich, LCPC

Practice founder and IFS-trained. In her own words: “IFS all day, every day, please.”

Rebecca, Diana, Melanie & Sabrina

Several of our associate clinicians are also IFS-trained or actively integrating it into their work with adults navigating anxiety, perfectionism, relational patterns, and the parts that carry the burdens of earlier seasons.

A careful match

We will match you to a clinician whose training and presence fit the parts of you that are ready to be heard.

The relationship is the one between you and the parts of yourself that have been running without a vote.
